About Bradley Stoke
Why live in Bradley Stoke?
History
Bradley Stoke was planned and created in the 1970s and 1980s as a residential hub for the employees of large businesses in the area such as Rolls-Royce and the Ministry of Defence. For areas richer in history, look at Stoke Gifford whose roots can be traced back to 1085, or the ancient market town of Thornbury with its 16th century castle that now functions as a hotel, or the pretty hillside village of Winterbourne.
Housing stock
The modern detached and semi-detached properties at the heart of Bradley Stoke are popular with young professionals, families and older couples alike because they offer practicality and convenience, designed around the main shopping facilities. Further out the housing stock gets more diverse, including some traditional stone cottages in village locations.
Facilities
In 2008, the Willow Brook Centre opened as a new all-purpose town centre for Bradley Stoke. With around 18 units, including Tesco Extra, plus restaurants, cafés and a leisure centre, local residents need never venture further afield. Plenty of car parking is also available surrounding the shops, but everything within Bradley Stoke is never more than a 20-minute walk away.
Thornbury houses around 12,000 residents and offers its own range of local shops, restaurants, a library and sports facilities, as well as supermarkets. Winterbourne similarly has a Co-op and Tesco Express and a good selection of other shops and facilities.
Education and health
Bradley Stoke is ideal for families, offering six primary schools, a library and Bradley Stoke Community School for pupils aged 11 to 16. Located within the town centre itself are dentists, doctors and opticians. The large village of Winterbourne has a choice of four schools including The Ridings’ Federation Winterbourne International Academy and an independent preparatory school, Silverhill. Thornbury has its own handful of education establishments ranging from pre-school level to secondary.
Transport
Located on the north side of Bristol just six miles from the city centre, Bradley Stoke is perfectly placed for people wanting the space, convenience and motorway access offered by a modern suburb, while still being within easy reach of the city’s facilities. The area is popular with commuters who travel all over the country because of its proximity to the M5, M4 and the M32. Bristol Parkway railway station is situated in Stoke Gifford, allowing easy rail access to London and South Wales, and there is also a very reliable bus service that takes residents into the centre of the city.
Points of interest
‘Harry Potter’ author JK Rowling attended St Michael’s Church of England Primary School in Winterbourne and allegedly based the character of Albus Dumbledore on her headmaster there.
