Vendors CommentsWhen we moved in back in 1991 we could walk in four directions and get to a post office in less than ten minutes. Two of these have closed but the other two have enough custom to carry on and there are still shops in those four places.We have never bought a house in a road which suffered much passing traffic and Auburn Road is one of the quietest. We used to be reluctant to move our car for fear of having to park a hundred yards or more away and so we made a parking space off the road in the front garden. It means we pay very little in fees to the controlled parking zone and visitors can park across our driveway without charge. But we very rarely have to move the car for shopping because such a large variety of shops from Blackboy Hill to The Triangle and Park Street can easily be walked to. We have lost some of the best shops, Harold Hockey (pens, stationery and artists materials) is missed but we have gained Cook (excellent frozen meals), Tesco Express, the Saturday Farmers market and several restaurants in Chandos Road (where there is a new micro-pub and a good new greengrocer).When we have wanted to attend ceremonies at Bristol University or performances at St Georges, Brandon Hill or the Hippodrome or Old Vic we can walk. The Redgrave theatre is even closer. We are also walking distance from the Bristol Lawn Tennis and Squash Club and Redland Green Bowling Club. The Redland Club in Burlington Road includes ping pong among its activities, but, at 82 I am too old to play well any more. I so still play croquet at Bristol Croquet Club which is about two miles away.I keep a rowing boat in the harbourmaster’s barn and used to row it the length of the floating harbour two or three times a week. We used to take the car to that because we had to carry oars, seats, cushions and the rudder, but there is a car park between the harbourmaster and the barn and it is rarely quite full. If we have children to visit we can walk to the Zoo or to fly kites on The Downs or in autumn, collect conkers. And if we go further afield, travel by car is often in the opposite direction to the main flow and we are free from jams.Auburn Road itself changes very little. People rarely leave and we are far from the oldest inhabitants after our 26 years so far.
