How to make your rental property feel like home

When you rent a property, it can be a challenge to think of ways to make a house a home without putting your deposit at risk.

The restrictions in rental agreements can sometimes make you feel worried about what you can change in a rental property.

However, we have come up with some great ways for you to put your own spin on your rental property and add a splash of your personality.

1. Ask your landlord

If you are eager to paint the magnolia wall in your living room, then just ask your landlord. Some landlords may be happy for you to paint walls as long as you ask for their permission first (however, you may have to pay for the materials yourself). At the end of the day, there’s no harm in asking.

2. Find a style you like and run with it

This is where cheap and cheerful home stores like Ikea play a perfect role. By picking out accessories and statement items, you can completely transform a room and add your own stamp to it.

3. You can never have enough plants

Plants and flowers can liven up any space. Not only do they purify the air of toxins in your home, but they also look great. Studies have proven that having plants in your home reduces stress and boosts your mood. It’s a win-win. *

4. White is always a go-to

Nothing makes a room feel cleaner and more spacious than a simplistic white room. So, if space is what you're looking for to make you feel more at home, then get yourself to a homeware store and start painting.

5. Play with lighting

We agree that it is very difficult to make a space feel like home when you hate the lighting around you. So have a play about with different lighting in your property, whether that’s buying standing lamps, table lamps, or asking your landlord if you can change the light fixtures. Changing the lighting in the room can make major aesthetic changes and can make a room feel completely different. You can also test the different colours of lights that you want to use to give you different vibes in each room. For example, in a kitchen, you may want a bright, sharp spotlight in comparison to your living room, in which you might reach for a softer, yellow-toned standing lamp to make the space feel cosier.

6. Don’t forget the textiles

Cushions, rugs, and throws are a tenant’s best friend and are a great way to make a room look less flat. Make a sofa or bed look extremely comfortable and welcoming by arranging cushions and throws in different patterns and styles that can completely transform your living space. Carpets that are worn and noisy floorboards are no longer an issue. Just stick a thick, cosy rug on top. They can all make a home feel a lot warmer in the winter too, especially the throws.
